Tracing the Mennonites in Żulawy Gdanskie

Gdansk, Biskupia Górka: In Mennonitów Street there is a classicistic wooden church. Due to Napoleonic Wars ( beginning of XIX cent.) among other buildings, two Mennonite preaching houses were destroyed. The church at Biskupia Górka was buit in 1818-1819. It was used by the Mennonites until 1945. At present it belongs to the metodists.

Olszynka - A brick, classicistic court of 1802, once plasterd. The backyard with ornamented, wooden porch.

Krępiec: Picturesque village by the Motlawa River with a few well - preserved XVIII - XIX cent. Dutch farm houses, characteristic for the Mennonites. Before world War II a leisure area for dwellers of Gdansk.

Wi¶lina - In the cemetery one finds a gate - belfry of 1792. It's a wooden building of pole construction, covered with boards. The ground floor spares semicircular, gate openings with two-sided doors, above there's a floor covered by a four-sided roof, crowned with a flag on top of the spire. Inside the gate, on 4 base poles curved inscriptions: funding by the chair of the village council in Dziewięć Włók, the church caretakers and the date and name of the gate's builder ( Jakub Jentzen 1792 ). Inside the village there are several, peculiar wooden houses.



Lędowo: A living house of the first half of XIX cent. Due to unfortunate window replacement, the house has lost its character of a rich, local house.

Wróblewo - A church Wniebowzięcia Naj¶więtszej Panny Maryi. Originally built in XVI cent. as a chapel of Schewke family. It's a wooden church of framework, covered by brick walls. The western tower capped with a metal helmet, with a flag on the top. In the XVIII cent the building was rebuilt, adding the western tower and in this shape, the church has preserved until nowadays. Nearby a guesthouse with kayak rental, one of the first ones in Żuławy.

Wocławy - Left of the route one can find the way to the ruins of a gothic temple, since the reformation taken over by protestants until 1945. In the western wall the relicts of tunnel stairs to a higher floor. In the nearby, church area there are tombstones removed from the church floor. One can find a perfectly exposed and preserved authentic painting by a Mennonite of Wróblewo.

Miłocin: An arcade house built in 1731. The arcade leant against 8 poles supporting a floor with decorative plaster of framework construction, all covered with small Dutch brick. During overall renovation works 1981-1982 adapted to living function for several families.

Trutnowy - In the southern part of the village there is an arcade house of 1720, supported by 8 poles with decorative swords, arranged in a kind of arcades. Overall renovation in 1984-89. The floor and two tops have framework construction with particular boards setting. The house possesses its original interior, with large hall and floor gallery. Numerous baroque details inside the building. In the large hall one can spot a model of XVIII cent. village of a future open museum including the miniatures of Żuławy buildings. In that house, where all visitors are kindly welcome, there's the head office of "Żuławy Gdańskie Society". The village was bestowed to one of the Gdansk officials Unislaw by the Polish king Lokietek in 1308, later sold to Teutonic Knights in 1310. The belonging of Gdansk, next Prussia. The original oval, so called "street plan", is protected by a local conservatory office. A gothic church Apostołów Piotra i Pawła, first mentioned in 1334, from 1580 to 1945 evangelical. A tower damaged in 1945 was turned into a flat roof, preserved until today. Inside there is a post - manneristic altar of 1675. On the outer, eastern wall , on the level of 1.5 m, an in-built stone plaque, pointing the flood water level of 1829. Above on the same wall there is a crest of Gdansk. A baroque presbytery of 1728. A mansard roof with vents, tiled in Dutch style, in the hall there is a black, murmur, erecting plaque. The main door with baroque ornaments. Large windows with original wooden work. In the village centre, an old inn of framework construction, once very common in Żuławy.

Cedry Wielkie - A village typical in Żuławy, built on a legible at present, oval plan. The most precious monument is a gothic church called ¦więtych Aniołów Stróżów. Since the Reformation to 1945 the church was evangelic. Burnt just after the war, rebuilt in the 90's of XX cent. In the village there are also some houses dating back to the first half of XIX cent. Żuławy Centre of Culture and Sport built with a help from the pomorskie voivodship office, where one can find tourist information on Żuławy region.

Leszkowy: The original village name Leczkowy, related to a Gdansk mayor Karol Leczkowy. The first information comes from 1399. The village was destroyed and robbed many times in its history. The Mennonites settled there in XVII cent. ,yet searching their traces today is pointless. There is a medieval church which, after several alterations, now possesses more baroque features. In Leszkowy one can climb up the Vistula embankment.

Kiezmark: There is a baroque church built in 1727, with the use of some older church remainings, seems to be one of the most spectacular and peculiar sacred buildings in Żuławy. The interior is menneristic and baroque, preserved as a whole. On the tower there is a metal face of mechanical clock of XIX cent. and two earlier sun clocks. Alike the majority of Żuławy Gdańskie in the middle ages, the village belonged to the Teutonic Knights of Gdansk, next to the city of Gdańsk and Prussia.

The part of Mennonite route in Żuławy Gdańskie ends in Kiezmark. To trace the Mennonites further, you need to cross the bridge over the Vistula.
